“Terrorism has no nationality or religion”
Everyone talks about terrorism which is one of the biggest problem of our society today and also a “Big Reality”. To fight against the terrorism we first need to understand their purpose and go to their roots. We need to know who terrorist are and what is terrorism.
Angus Martyn, briefing the Australian Parliament, stated:
“The international community has never succeeded in developing an accepted comprehensive definition of terrorism. During the 1970s and 1980s, the United Nations attempts to define the term floundered mainly due to differences of opinion between various members about the use of violence in the context of conflicts over national liberation and self-determination”.
The word terrorism or terrorist is very commonly used by many people but their meaning is not same for everyone, its explanation may vary depending upon who is using them and what he wants. From the very common definition “terrorism in its broadest meaning is the name of violence, or threatened use of violence in order to achieve a political, religious or ideological aim.” But there is no universally agreed definition for this crime. Everyone who is thinking only about their own benefits and destroying the rights of other people is spreading violence. So from this perspective every political party that forces his followers to fight against them and make them feel that opposite party members are their enemy, is spreading violence. Every media industry that is inspiring fear through its news and views instead of awareness, is spreading violence. Every political or social act that inspires war and hate against the other group is responsible for spreading violence and motivating terrorism.
Terrorism has become a major problem and needs to be seriously taken care of, to save the values of our societies and the rights and freedom of citizen. But it’s really hard to fight against terrorism and seems almost impossible to completely vanish it without a proper strategy worldwide and developing awareness in every individual. Hardly a week goes by without an act of terrorism taking place somewhere in the world, extensively distressing innocent people.
If we talk about what countries are doing in this regard so countries have strategies to fight against terrorist groups. Within the framework of the United States there are eighteen universal instruments that have been included and explained related to specific terrorist instruments. Member states of different countries continually coordinate with other countries in the world and discuss about anti-terrorism policies and resolutions, through the General Assembly. There is also number of programs, offices and agencies of the United States system which has been very active and play a major rule against terrorism. These agencies and offices consult the member states and assist them in making future policies. For the betterment of these agencies, member states in September 2006, introduced a global strategy against terrorism. This strategy agreed them to a common operational framework. The strategy focus on a plan of actions to prevent and contest terrorism and to make sure the rules and principles to be acted upon worldwide.
But this is not only a political problem and cannot be solved with only country level efforts and strategies. This is the problem of every individual in all around the world because common people and their families suffers more during all these terrorist activities. So everyone has to be aware and fight against terrorism and we should think about the ways to vanish it completely. Awareness is very important to wipe it out and make people believe their authorities and their government is working for their good. If the common people support or trust their authorities, the terrorist gain strength and freedom of action. The terrorist primary goal is to make people against their authorities and to make them fight with each other, their real goal is to provoke massive retaliation.
So fighting against terrorism and defeating terrorist groups is possible when people have faith and unity between themselves and among their authorities. The major power against terrorism is the power of harmony and a united nation. We have to realize that we have a country that we love and freedom that other would die for. If we want to stop terrorism, we have to stop fighting and blaming each other. It is the battle of minds, so we need to change the mindset and we need to include new ideology into the minds of our people, so that the terrorism can be stopped.
I would sum up all the discussion by the very famous quotation:
“The war against terrorism is terrorism”
